Quality of Care: Systemic Corticosteroids for Asthma

Asthma is one of the leading causes of hospitalization of children.

How to interpret this data: A high percentage is better than a low percentage. The national average for administration of corticosteroids is 98%. ACH generally performs better than the average hospital when it comes to administering corticosteroids to asthma patients.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) guideline for diagnosis and treatment of asthma directs that 100% of patients who are sick enough to require inpatient hospitalization for treatment of asthma should receive drug therapy, which includes Relievers and Systemic Steroids.

The use of controller therapy may have long-term implications by preventing chronic airway inflammation in persistent asthma. The controllers are being used more frequently in the treatment of children over 6 years of age than in younger age groups.
