Arkansas Children's Hospital Community Outreach

Programs in Your Community

ARKANSAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL COMMUNITY OUTREACH
As Arkansas’ only pediatric medical center, Children’s Hospital has taken a proactive leadership role with our outreach efforts to help insure the future health and safety of children in our state. Our community outreach programs are collectively called “Wellness on Wheels” to reflect the hospital’s emphasis on reaching children and adults throughout Arkansas with informative health education programs relating to child safety, wellness and prevention. Following is a summary of the statewide outreach programs offered.

HEALTH & SAFETY
The anchor of the “Wellness on Wheels” program, these classroom presentations are an extremely effective way of providing basic health and safety information to children k-5th grade. The hospital’s Outreach Specialist provides fun and informative presentations, plus a special goody bag for reach student. Topics offered are “Healthy Habits” and “Be Safe Be Smart.”

BURN PREVENTION & TREATMENT EDUCATION
Led by a nurse from the hospital’s Burn Center, these classroom presentations are targeted to high school and college students interested in health care professions. Information covered includes a review of the structure and function of skin, burn treatment and burn prevention. Content of the presentations can vary from basic to more advanced levels depending on the targeted audience. Similar presentations are also available for healthcare workers, fire fighters or the general public. Professors/teachers may click here to learn more or to schedule a class parksjc@archildrens.org.

Free burn prevention and fire safety material and training is also available for teachers, firefighters and others who teach younger children.
Fire Safety Houses
FIRE SAFETY HOUSES
The mobile Fire Safety House is an excellent teaching tool for instructing school-age children on how to best respond should their home catch on fire. With two training rooms, props and non-toxic smoke, the Fire Safety House teaches children about smoke detectors, checking doors, two-ways out, and the importance of not hiding during a fire. In addition to the Fire Safety House based at ACH, additional houses are permanently located in Rogers, Walnut Ridge, Camden and McGehee to better serve the entire state. Any of these houses may be reserved through ACH in cooperation with local fire departments.

CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY
A certified car seat technician from the hospital offers presentations of varying levels focusing on the correct use of car safety seats, booster seats and seat belts. Information presented is excellent for both adults and teens. Also, Car Seat Check-Up are offered periodically for the general public and are held on the 1st Tuesday of each month at ACH. At check-up events, our trained professionals can examine your vehicle to insure correct car seat installation, correct use of restraints & safety clips, and appropriateness of the seat currently in use.

SPEAKERS BUREAU
The ACH Speakers Bureau consists of hospital medical staff and employees who are available to speak to your organization on a wide-range of topics related to children health issues, such as Eating Disorders, Childhood Asthma, Angel One Transport, and Children and Grief. A complete listing of topics is available upon request. Audiences may include civic groups, social organizations, school faculty, parent groups or community-wide forums.

ACH BOOTH AT EVENTS
Children’s Hospital participates in selected fairs and events around the state related to children’s health. Booth activities may include fingercasting, creating medical art, learning bike safety, or a variety of other offerings. A wide variety of health education materials and fun giveaways are also distributed.

OUTREACH DISTRIBUTION CENTER
ACH Community Outreach produces and distributes a wide variety of health education materials and promotional items to groups all across Arkansas. Many of these materials are distributed through our classroom presentation programs and attendance at health fairs. However, there are events we are unable to attend in person, so we are happy to send giveaways that you may distribute such as pencils, stickers, band-aid dispensers and safety tips sheets.

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

ACH has been partnered with King Elementary School in Little Rock since the school opened in 1993. King Elementary is located just two blocks from the hospital and has about 700 students. Partnership activities include ACH participation in annual events such as the Fall Festival, Wellness Week, the Chili Supper and Talent Show. In addition more than 20 hospital employees volunteer 30-minutes each week to read to students at the school through a program called Reading Aloud Renaissance. In 1999, ACH was presented the “Large Partner of the Year” Award by the Little Rock School District.

SAFE KIDS COALITION
The SAFE KIDS Coalition is dedicated to the prevention of childhood injuries through education and awareness targeted to both parents and children. Nationwide and in our state, accidental injury is the #1 killer of children under age 14. Led by Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the Arkansas Department of Health, the SAFE KIDS Coalition consists of a diverse group of individuals and organizations joining forces to address prevention issues such as motor vehicle safety, fire and burn safety, bicycle safety, accidental poisoning and water safety. There are more than 240 coalitions across the United States.

“Wellness on Wheels” is just another way that Arkansas Children’s Hospital is striving to make a positive impact on children throughout the state. An ounce of prevention is truly worth a pound of cure. Major support for these outreach programs is provided by the Statewide Circle of Friends organization.
