Children Home Alone

Remember Kids...

  • Carry your house key with you in a safe place (inside a shirt pocket or sock). Do not leave it under a mat or on a ledge outside the house.
  • Don’t go into an empty house or apartment if things don’t look right – a broken window, ripped screen or open door.
  • Check-in with your parents or a neighbor immediately after arriving home from school.
  • Make sure all doors and windows are locked.
  • Don’t talk to strangers.
  • Never accept gifts or rides from people you don’t know well.
  • Make sure your home has working smoke detectors and the batteries are checked monthly.
  • Post 9-1-1 or the emergency phone number in your area to report a crime, a fire or for an ambulance.
  • Never let a caller on the phone or at the door know that you are at home alone.
  • Remember to say, "Mom can’t come to the phone (or door) right now."
  • Tell your parents if anything happens that frightens you or makes you feel uncomfortable.
  • Never play with matches or sharp objects.
  • Never use the stove or electrical appliances, without adult supervision.
  • Never take medication/drugs unless a trusted adult gives them to you.
