Children Who Play with Fire


Arkansas Firesetter Intervention, Referral and Education Program (F.I.R.E.)

A statewide effort to offer practical, helpful resources and support to families of children who play with or set fires and to the professionals who are trying to help them in order to reduce the effects of youth-set fires on these families and their communities.

Call (free) to refer a child or adolescent who plays with or has set fires.

You may also call for assistance if you are working with the family of a child who has set fires or you want to learn more about youth firesetting.

Important tips for working with children who play with or set fires:

  • The families of these kids must have Fire Safety Education.
  • The families of these kids must have Smoke Detectors in their homes.
  • The child must receive Fire Safety Education.
  • The child and family may need help from mental health professionals.

If you cannot provide all of these services, please call to get help.

We have a free program for the families of children who play with fire. We offer:

  • Fire safety/burn prevention education
  • Screening and referral to other health-related services
  • Free smoke detectors for the families of firesetters
  • Free lock box for lighters and matches
  • Other educational material

Mental Health Professionals, Teachers, Firefighters, Police Officers and others

We will come to your facility and provide our continuing education class FREE.

The objective is to outline the basic nature of firesetting and what can be done to decrease the chance that it leads to harm.

The specific content will be customized for the needs of your staff and may include:

  • Categories of Firesetters
  • Myths and Facts about Firesetting Behavior
  • Assessing the Risk of Firesetting
  • Screening, Assessment and Referral
  • Fire Safety Education
  • Parenting Skills
  • Resources for Parents, Counselors and Educators

Youth Firesetter Intervention Specialist I certification courses offered in cooperation with the Arkansas Fire Academy.
