Choosing the right place for acute rehabilitation for a pediatric
patient can be difficult. At Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH),
we strive to make the rehabilitation process the best possible experience
for every child we treat.
- The Arkansas Children's Hospital Rehabilitation Program is the only pediatric
acute rehabilitation program in the state to be accredited by the Commission
on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)
- The Arkansas Children's Hospital Rehabilitation Program takes a team approach
to patient care, encouraging participation from both the patient and their
family in decision-making and daily care activities.
- As the pediatric teaching affiliate of the University of Arkansas for Medical
Sciences (UAMS),
Arkansas Children's Hospital offers access to top quality medical care including
all pediatric medical and surgical specialists, and ensures continuity throughout
the care continuum.
The Arkansas Children's Hospital Rehabilitation Program includes:
- a 20-bed unit with capacity to take up to eight ventilator-dependent patients
- interdisciplinary care
- a recreation gym with a graded-depth pool
- a team of specialists with pediatric rehabilitation expertise
The Arkansas Children's Hospital Rehabilitation Program serves a dual
role.
- Accepts trauma patients within days to weeks of initial injury, helping
them regain skills in mobility, self-care, thinking and communications.
- Accepts admissions for patients with disabilities resulting from a number
of acute medical and/or chronic conditions including:
Traumatic Brain Injury
Spinal Cord Injury
Guillain-Barré Syndrome
Childhood Stroke
Encephalitis
Central Nervous System Tumors
Cerebral Palsy
Spina Bifida
The Arkansas Children's Hospital Rehabilitation team works with each
family to set goals and develop an individualized therapy program for each
person served.
In addition to the child and family members, the rehabilitation
team includes:
- Pediatric Physiatrist/Developmental Pediatrician

- Physical and Therapists
- Occupational Therapists
- Orthotists and Prosthetists
- Speech and Language Pathologist
- Audiologist
- Nutritionist
- Child Life Specialist
- Recreational Therapists

- Respiratory Therapists
Extra attention is given to the special needs of each patient and family,
including:
- Family-centered approach to care with parents and caregivers welcomed as
an essential part of the rehabilitation team
- Age-appropriate therapy rooms and equipment
- Open invitation to parents and adult caregivers to stay with the patient
for the duration of the hospitalization
Patients and families are treated in an ethical and respectful manner.
Staff
of the Arkansas Children's Hospital Rehabilitation Program will:
- Provide services that enable each patient and family to reach mutually
desirable and attainable goals.
- Respect each patient's and family's right to confidentiality and self-determination.
- Be optimistic, supportive, and truthful about the potential benefits and
risks of any service provided.
- Demonstrate appropriate assertiveness and sensitivity in communicating
with patients and families.
Outcomes tell the true story. The Arkansas Children’s
Hospital Rehabilitation Program participates in a national data system for
comparison and benchmarking purposes. Based on this data and documented historical
trends,
- The average length of stay is well under 30 days.
- Gains in function during hospitalization as well as after discharge are
consistently comparable to the national scores.
- Nearly 90% of patients are discharged to home rather than to a secondary
longer-term program.
The program also welcomes input from patients and families regarding
satisfaction with each stay.
